MATH
Some of the students are working on telling time to the minute and
elapsed time. Others are finished with this work and doing
multiple step problem solving. Everyday we begin be doing four
math "boxes" or maintenance problems. We also do a daily word
problem or P.O.D. Last week we learned a card game called "Target
Number" where you try to use as many cards as possible in a math
problem that ends up with the target number as the answer.
READING
We finished "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom" and we're now
reading another Louis Sachar book called, "Sideways Stories from
Wayside School." Literature Circles will start on Monday.
We are all going to read "Henry Huggins."
WRITING
We took our first spelling test today. We have been writing about
our lives (personal narratives) in our beautiful writing
notebooks. We're working on being able to write a story like it's
happening right now instead of writing a past tense summary. We
also began cursive this week. We started with the letters 'c',
'a', 'd', and 'g'. We think it's easy.
MUSIC
We have been singing:
The Eagle
I Have a Dream
Grandma's Feather Bed
America
Sarasponda
I Love the Mountains
Little Blue Top
Camp Granada
We also learned the "Electric Slide" dance.
SCIENCE: ROCKS & FOSSILS
We took a trip to Lilydale to hunt for fossils. It was really
muddy and wet. It used to be a brickyard, so there were brick
pieces everywhere. There was a cave with bats and guano.
There was a steep hill where we found all the fossils. Some of
the clay was deep enough to sink into and people were falling
everywhere. James washed all our fossils and the next day we
tried to them and have a fossil museum. See our Photo Gallery for pics.
In class, we made sedimentary and metamorphic rocks using crayon
shavings, and playdoh to show how fossils are formed. Today we
will try to make an igneous rock from crayon shavings. Lots of
kids are bringing their rock collections to share.

From the Teacher:
I am still in need of Literature Circle volunteers for Thursdays and
Fridays. I could also use someone to type up this letter on
Friday afternoons. Thanks.

In math, we are doing math boxes.
They are math problems in four boxes. We are also doing math games like
the awesome game in the awesome game you draw cards 1 through 9 and who
ever has the most points under 1000 you win. We were also telling time
and problem solving and stuff.
In gym we are learning how to
juggle. Juggling is real hard when you use balls. We are also learning
how to throw a football. We did fitness stations. In fitness stations
the stations were jump rope, push ups, sit ups, juggling and more.
In
writing, we pick a topic and write a story about it. First, we decorate
our notebooks. Then we practiced coming up with ideas to write about.
This
week we read "There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom." It's good. We also
read "The Mouse and the Motorcycle." It's also really good. We do
that popcorn style.
