It’s been a great year full of learning and fun!
We started small learning about ourselves and expanded our horizons to include our communities, the world and finally our solar system.
Our Bodies: We had help from a doctor (Amelia’s mom) and a nutritionist from the Wedge Co-op, teach us all about our bodies and how they work. We learned about the major organs and how they function as well as how to take good care of our bodies by eating healthy food, exercising, and getting plenty of sleep. We even made life size cut outs of ourselves.
Our Community: We studied our community and communities like ours. We discussed the jobs that a community needs and how we can help make our community a great place.
Our World: After the New Year, 2008! We moved into studying the world. Based on the book Flat Stanley, we made our own flat people to send around the world to a family member or friend. Our flat people went on some amazing journeys, and it gave us a chance to learn about a lot of great places. The kids will each do a self-directed study project about a destination of their choice.
Our Solar System; Finally, we moved into learning about the solar system. We learned songs and many interesting facts about the solar system. Hopefully this year has given them a good perspective on where we fit in the world. The year will culminate with a musical play entitled Star Search.

 | | | | | | parent letter May 30, 2008 | May 30, 2008 Dear Classroom 120 Families, There are only 8 days of school left this year and we have a lot going on. Our final Portfolio Sharing is on Thursday, June 5, 2008, 7:30-9:00a.m. We invite you to come to school to view your child’s portfolio. You will only need 20-30 minutes to see all of your students beautiful work, so come anytime during that window that works for you. I hope you will be able to join us! The students are having a great time hearing and creating poetry. Now we are editing and fine-tuning our poems, paying special attention to line breaks. As we are wind up our Solar system unit, the kids are each completing their books about the planets. Next week we will add Neptune and Pluto to our books. Teams presented the country projects and flags that they completed in school. This assignment tied into the fraction unit we have been working on, since some flags can be talked about in fractions. Students will be creating a “personal flag” that tells the viewer something about themselves. The Barton School Talent Show is scheduled for Wednesday, June 4th at 8:45 a.m. Lake Day is Friday June 6th, which is also Sarah’s last day as our student teacher. I will be getting her a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble bookstore. Any contributions towards her gift would be welcome. Lake Day events start at 10:00 a.m. with the Awards Ceremony at the Bandshell. We will leave Barton to walk there at 9:15, feel free to join us as we walk around the lake. Please try to pack a “garbage free” (reusable containers and drink bottles) lunch for you and your child. The picnic and activities will start at around 11:00 as the awards program finishes up. Hope you’re enjoying the spring weather! Sincerely, Jane and Sarah May 30, 2008 Dear Classroom 120 Families, There are only 8 days of school left this year and we have a lot going on.
