There are many factors that go into designing curriculum for Challenge students. These are key components to my planning.
- Challenging: The students work with higher
order
thinking problem
solving.
- Student Interest: At the end of last
year I surveyed
my 3rd and 4th students. I gave them many topic ideas and asked them to
rank each on a 0 - 5 basis. I am using their favorite ideas as
well as others I am developing based on the school theme of Harmony.
- Variety of Intelligences Used: Using Howard
Gardeners theories of Multiple Intelligences, I vary the units and
individual lessons so that children’s strengths are tapped or that they
can try something new in a safe setting.
- World View: It is important to me to broaden
the students thinking to include other people’s perspectives and ideas.
- Technology: There are so many
exciting ways to
communicate through technology. For example, last year the second
graders really enjoyed creating claymation stories and watching
them on the big screen.
- Leadership: I try to give students the
opportunity
to be leaders within the group as much as possible, to coach them how
to be leaders when they return to their classes, by facilitating and
delegating.
- Arts Integration: This is my passion. I’ve been fortunate to work with Intermedia Arts
through a variety of grants to teach teachers how they can integrate
arts into their curriculum. I find that creating art together
builds community, fosters an eye for beauty, helps children problem
solve and is engaging and fun.
